CHANGED: KING RANCH (15 miles) TO CHESLEN PRESERVE

HIKE & MEETING PLACE CHANGED (SEE BELOW) 15 miles. Depart G & R at 8:00 AM or Ply. Mtg. at 8:15 (45 miles to trailhead.) Once part of King Ranch and now divided into estates, the land of Buck and Doe Valley Farms still retains its undeveloped character, with hills, streams, woods and high grassy meadows. The hike follows the same route as the Spring King Ranch trek and allows the hiker the opportunity to walk over the lovely green hills of the Brandywine Valley during a different season. This is a STRENUOUS hike with lots of ups and downs. Bring boots, lunch and water. Cost: $1.00 + $1.00 contribution for the Brandywine Conservancy. CHANGED TO CHESLEN PRESERVE, DUE TO PROBLEMS WITH ACCESS TO PROPERTIES ON KING RANCE HIKE ROUTE: 14 miles. ChesLen Preserve, also once a part of King Ranch, offers many of the same vistas and challenges as our traditional long King Ranch hike. Because of difficulties with access to much of the land we usually hike over, Bruce Melgary and I mapped out a beautiful, interesting, and challenging hike in ChesLen. We are working to resolve the access issues by next spring's hike, so that we may return to our traditional route, but  we hope everyone who planned to come out for the King Ranch hike will enjoy the ChesLen hike this fall.

 

ALSO CHANGED: MEETING PLACE AND TIME: For those using public transportation, take the SEPTA 101 trolley from 69th Street to the Springfield Mall stop. Meet leader at this stop at 8:25 a.m. (25 miles to trailhead).
