THIS HIKE IS CANCELED DUE TO ALREADY SLIPPERY STREETS AND FORECASTS OF FREEZING RAIN OVERNIGHT AND SNOW THROUGHOUT THE DAY ON SUNDAY. HIKE LEADER HOPES TO RESCHEDULE IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
About 16 miles. Meet at 7:15 at the (west) Chestnut Hill SEPTA Train Station (Germantown and Evergreen Avenues) for the first morning train to 30th Street Station. (Currently the West line is listed at 7:15 a.m., but schedule might change after this is published and an updated time will be posted to Meetup.) For those who want to join us in Center City, please assemble by 8:00 a.m. inside 30th Street Station at the large PA Railroad WWII Memorial Sculpture on the Center City side of the station.
This is a classic, traditional Batona hike. We traverse Fairmount Park and walk mostly on trails within the largest city park in the world. The terrain is level to hilly and rocky. We will finish at Germantown and Rex in Chestnut Hill, and public transportation back to Center City is available on both Chestnut Hill train lines and the 23 Bus. Ice or accumulating snow cancels. In the event this hike is not practical due to public transportation problems, the leader may substitute a loop hike on trails along the Wissahickon Creek that will originate at the Chestnut Hill West Train Station. Any changes (including last minute) will be posted on Meetup. Cost: $1.00 plus train fare. RSVP required at https://www.meetup.com/Batona-Hiking-Club/ or by contacting leader. Leader: Bruce Melgary, 215-498-0472, bmelgary@gmail.com.
