APPALACHIAN TRAIL MAINTENANCE, 18013

  • 12 Apr 2023
  • 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Fox Gap Parking Area (40.9353, -75.1970) Bangor, PA 18013

7:30 AM sharp, Fox Gap Parking Area (40.9353, -75.1970) on Route 191 beside the Appalachian Trail. This is strenuous boundary maintenance work, painting blazes and clearing boundary markers. The boundary is anywhere from 200 feet to 1000 feet off the Trail and can be rugged in spots.  Work boots, work gloves, long pants, sleeves and tick spray are strongly recommended. Other equipment needed will be provided by the Leader. Boundary markers are surveyor markers for the Appalachian Trail corridor and BATONA, as a maintainer club, is required to clear the area and blaze trees or rocks to identify markers and keep them visible. "Safety Fundamentals" are reviewed on the Appalachian Trail Conservancy website. Look for "Trail Maintenance Tasks, Hazards, and Recommended Safety Gear." The site is a good resource for anyone doing work on the Trail or just hiking. Mike Hughes, the leader for this activity will have these guidelines to review before we start working. If you plan to meet at Fox Gap, it is essential to confirm with Mike. We expect to complete work by 3:30 PM. Any questions, please contact Mike Hughes at 267-784-5756, deecrismel@gmail.com.
