HOPEWELL BIG WOODS, 19465

  • 21 Mar 2021
  • 8:00 AM
  • Warwick County Park, 191 County Park Road, Pottstown, PA

PLEASE NOTE THE NEW MEETING PLACE. Due to high water, we will not be able to safely cross French Creek (on the Horseshoe Trail) near our original meeting place at the elementary school.

20-25 miles. Meet at 8:00 a.m. at Warwick County Park, 191 County Park Road, Pottstown, PA 19465 (40.167744, -75.723894). (The gate to the park doesn’t open until 8:00 a.m.) Hopewell Big Woods is the last large, unbroken forest left in southeastern Pennsylvania. It is considered to be one of the most important natural areas in the region. The conservation area encircles French Creek State Park and the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, and covers over 73,000 acres, or 110 square miles. We will begin by exploring the trails in beautiful Warwick County Park and then follow the Horseshoe Trail past St. Peter’s Village to Crow’s Nest Preserve. We will make a large circle following the trails in Crow’s Nest and will then return, again following the Horseshoe Trail, to our cars at Warwick County Park. Depending on trail conditions and the energy of the group, we may include a portion of Hopewell Furnace in our travels. There are multiple water crossings on this hike.

A face mask is required and must be worn when social distancing is difficult. RSVP required at https://www.meetup.com/Batona-Hiking-Club/ or by contacting leader. Limit 10 participants, including leader. Cost $1.00. Leader: Abbie Wysor, 610-742-5967, abbiewysor@gmail.com.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TRAILS ARE VERY WET AND MUDDY IN PLACES, SO PLEASE BE PREPARED WITH EXTRA SOCKS AND AS MUCH WATERPROOFING AS YOU CAN MANAGE FOR YOUR FEET.
