Pennsville, NJ 08070 for the ferry crossing from this location at 10:30. A jitney transports riders from the dock to the fort. The hike will begin at the fort at approximately 10:45 AM. Pea Patch Island is a small, low, marshy island, approximately 1 mi long, and located in the mid channel of the Delaware River near its entrance to the Delaware Bay. Once the location of strategic military defenses, the island is currently owned by the State of Delaware as Fort Delaware State Park. The island provides a significant wetlands stop for migratory birds. It is the location of the largest colony of herons in the U.S. north of Florida. Bring lunch and water, bug repellant, hat.
