TULPEHOCKEN CREEK (UNION CANAL) TRAIL AND BLUE MARSH LAKE

  • 26 Mar 2017
  • 10:30 AM
  • Berks County Park Rangers, 1901 Tulpehocken Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610 (40.355473,-75.963230)

10 miles.   Meet at the Ranger parking lot on Tulpehocken Road at 10:30 AM (If traveling NW on Rte 222, exit onto Broadcasting Road and turn right for 1/3 mile to Tulpehocken Rd. Turn right on Tulpehocken and the entrance to Berks County Park Rangers parking lot is 1.05 miles on the left). Hikers wanting a ride should contact leader by email prior to 6 pm Thursday night for a possible pickup in Woodbury, NJ. Located near Reading, the canal trail proceeds along the lovely Tulpehocken Creek with an impressive historic red covered bridge, 4 canal locks, historic wagon works, and mills.  We’ll hunt for the locks and a cemetery and enjoy a corner of Blue Marsh we don’t usually hike with a great view overlooking the lake.  This is version 2.0 of a classic Batona hike--an easy one with lots to see and amenities along the trail.  Note that the hike requires a car shuttle.
